Septic Solutions to share practical homeowner guidance on septic maintenance, inspections, pumping, water conservation, drainfield protection, and accessing county records ahead of EPA’s 14th annual SepticSmart Week, September 14-18
ARLINGTON, Wash., Aug. 24, 2026 — More than 1 in 5 households in the U.S. depend on individual septic systems or small community cluster systems to treat their wastewater. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency created its nationwide SepticSmart initiative to help homeowners understand proper system use, maintenance, and environmental protection. SepticSmart Week 2026 will run September 14 through 18 and mark the initiative’s 14th anniversary. Septic Solutions LLC, a family-owned septic company based in Arlington and serving Snohomish, King, Skagit, Island, and Whatcom counties, is launching a Western Washington education campaign focused on practical steps homeowners can take before warning signs become emergencies.

“Most people only learn how their septic system works after it’s already backing up into the house,” said Art Nikolin, Operations Manager at Septic Solutions LLC. “SepticSmart Week gives us a reason to get ahead of that. We’d rather walk someone through a routine inspection in September than get an emergency call in December.”
The campaign follows the EPA’s seven SepticSmart messages. “Think at the Sink” encourages homeowners to understand what they can and cannot put into a septic system, including keeping fats, oils, grease, food waste, and harsh chemicals out of kitchen drains. “Don’t Overload the Commode” explains that toilets should receive only human waste and toilet paper, not wipes or other trash. “Don’t Strain Your Drain” focuses on efficient household water use, including spacing out laundry loads, dishwasher cycles, and other water-intensive activities. “Shield Your Field” covers proper drainfield care, including keeping vehicles, structures, deep-rooted trees, and excess surface water away from the area. “Protect It and Inspect It” and “Pump Your Tank” address routine professional maintenance, while “Keep It Clean” explains the connection between septic-system care and private-well water quality.
Septic Solutions is pairing the EPA’s maintenance messages with possible warning signs its technicians regularly investigate in the field: sewage odors near the tank or drainfield, multiple slow drains, gurgling plumbing, standing water or persistently damp soil over the system, and unusually bright or spongy grass during otherwise dry conditions. These symptoms warrant a professional septic system evaluation, but they do not all prove that the tank simply needs pumping. A localized plumbing blockage, venting problem, failed pump, damaged pipe, hydraulically overloaded drainfield, or another system condition may produce similar symptoms.
A less obvious part of the campaign concerns septic records rather than plumbing. Septic Solutions has launched four free county-specific septic records-search pages for Snohomish, King, Skagit, and Island counties. The pages help homeowners locate as-built drawings, permits, inspection history, service records, and drainfield diagrams, and the company offers to handle the search on the homeowner’s behalf at no cost.
Because each county uses a different portal and search process, homeowners may need a property address, parcel number, property identification number, or other county-specific information to locate the correct documents. Whatcom County also provides an official online septic and drinking-water records tool, although Septic Solutions has not yet published a dedicated Whatcom County records-search page. Available records can help homeowners identify the system’s location, layout, components, permit history, and previous service information before maintenance, construction, landscaping, or a professional evaluation.
The campaign also directs homeowners to confirmed 2026 septic rebates and inspection incentives in Snohomish, Skagit, Island, and Whatcom counties. Some programs provide combined assistance of up to $500, but eligible services, application timing, homeowner training, financial-assistance requirements, and payment procedures differ by county.
Septic Solutions has published county-specific guides for Snohomish County, King County, Skagit County, and Island County and encourages homeowners to review the applicable requirements before scheduling an inspection, pumping service, or qualifying maintenance work.
From August 5 through September 18, Septic Solutions plans to publish and recirculate homeowner resources across its blog, service pages, and social channels covering inspections, pumping frequency, household water use, drainfield protection, warning signs, county records, and financial-assistance programs. During the campaign period, technicians will also answer homeowner questions about system history, maintenance timing, and next steps as part of scheduled service and inspection visits.
