Sneed believes the rise of AI makes that lesson more important—not less. While AI can produce polished sentences in seconds, she argues that it cannot replace the knowledge, imagination, empathy, and critical thinking developed through years of reading.

“Reading widely exposes us to different voices, cultures, perspectives and experiences,” Sneed says. “That exposure helps writers develop a deeper understanding of people and the world around them. It also teaches readers to think critically and recognize what is meaningful, what may be misleading and what deserves a closer look.”

Sneed says reading also creates something AI cannot duplicate: a uniquely personal imaginative experience.

“When we read books, we create images that are unique to us,” Sneed says. “We hear characters’ voices in our own minds and imagine the people, places and experiences described on the page in ways that are personal to us. AI cannot replicate the images and voices we create in our imagination when we read a book. That experience belongs to the reader.”

Sneed also remembers Dolly Parton as someone who understood the transformative power of books. Through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Parton helped put millions of books into children’s hands, giving young readers access to books regardless of their family’s financial circumstances.

“Dolly Parton understood that a book is more than paper and words,” Sneed says. “A book can open a door. It can introduce a child to a new world, give them confidence, spark their imagination and help them believe that there is more waiting for them in the world beyond their computer screens.”

For Sneed, that legacy is especially important in an increasingly digital world. She believes children and adults alike must continue developing the ability to read deeply, think critically and engage with ideas beyond their own experiences.

“The ability to read deeply, question information and understand another person’s perspective is not simply an academic skill. It is a lifelong tool,” Sneed says.

Before someone can write a story that resonates, Sneed argues, they must first understand stories. Before developing a distinctive voice, they need to experience the voices of other writers.

“AI may help us write faster, but it cannot do the reading for us,” Sneed says. “If we want better writers, we have to create better readers.”
