US stock futures diverged on October as inflation reached 3.7%, AI financing concerns hit technology shares and major US banks reported mixed Q3 earnings
NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, October 15, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — US financial markets entered October under renewed pressure from stronger-than-expected inflation, higher borrowing costs and concerns about the financial sustainability of artificial intelligence infrastructure investment.
Beinsure analysts identify three principal factors driving market performance: the repricing of Federal Reserve interest rate expectations, increasing scrutiny of AI-related capital expenditure and divergent earnings results across major financial institutions.
Nasdaq 100 futures declined 380.25 points, or 1.26%, while S&P 500 futures fell 27.5 points, or 0.35%. Dow Jones futures advanced 202 points, equivalent to 0.39%. The divergence followed equity market selloff, when the S&P 500 declined 1.11% to 7,718.94 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 1.88% to 26,692.87. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.09% to 51,621.48, while the Russell 2000 fell 1.9%.
“US stock futures were mixed on October 2026, as Nasdaq futures fell 1.3% following stronger-than-expected inflation data, a technology selloff and mixed bank earnings”, stated Tetiana Mykhailova, Senior Investment Analyst & CFO Beinsure, Commercial Director of Finance Media.
Despite the correction, the S&P 500 remained 12.8% higher year-to-date, compared with a 14.8% gain for the Nasdaq.
US INFLATION COMPLICATES THE FEDERAL RESERVE OUTLOOK
September’s Consumer Price Index increased 3.7% year over year, above the 3.6% consensus forecast and August’s 3.4% reading. Monthly inflation reached 0.6%, compared with 0.4% in August.
Energy accounted for a substantial share of the increase. Gasoline prices rose 9.1% during September, contributing more than half of the monthly headline inflation gain. The broader energy index advanced 5.2% month over month and 20.4% annually.
Core inflation, excluding food and energy, accelerated to 2.6% annually from 2.4%, exceeding expectations of 2.5%. Monthly core inflation reached 0.3%, above the anticipated 0.2%.
Beinsure analysts assess the combination of higher headline and core inflation as a potential constraint on Federal Reserve policy flexibility. Energy-driven price increases can affect broader business costs, while persistent underlying inflation makes monetary easing more difficult.
Following the CPI release, Citigroup revised its forecast to include a 25-basis-point Federal Reserve rate increase in December. Futures markets indicated a 27% probability of an October increase and a 67% probability of a December increase as of early October 15.
These expectations matter for equity valuations because higher interest rates increase financing costs and reduce the present value of future corporate earnings, particularly for companies whose valuations depend heavily on anticipated growth.
AI INVESTMENT FACES GREATER FINANCIAL SCRUTINY
Technology shares experienced disproportionate selling pressure as investors reassessed the profitability and financing requirements of AI infrastructure.
CoreWeave declined approximately 15% on October 14 and fell another 4.5% in premarket trading on October 15. Oracle lost nearly 9% during Wednesday’s session and declined a further 2% before Thursday’s opening.
Nvidia fell 1.3% in premarket trading, while Micron Technology dropped 4% and Advanced Micro Devices declined 1.9%.
The previous session’s selloff erased approximately $80 bn in combined market capitalization across several AI-related companies.
Beinsure analysts distinguish between technology companies financing capital expenditure through established operating cash flows and businesses relying more heavily on borrowing or external investment.
The latter face greater exposure to higher financing costs and potential changes in investor risk appetite.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company reinforced concerns about the macroeconomic outlook by warning of uncertainty in 2027, despite reporting its sixth consecutive record quarterly profit.
AI developer Anthropic presented a different picture, reportedly telling prospective investors that third-quarter revenue increased 45% from the preceding quarter to $16.8 bn, alongside adjusted profitability.
The contrast points to a central valuation question: whether AI revenue growth can generate sufficient returns to justify expanding infrastructure investment and associated financing commitments.
MAJOR US BANKS REPORT DIVERGENT EARNINGS
“Third-quarter results indicate that US banking profitability remains supported by lending, deposit growth and selected capital markets activities, although trading volatility, funding expenses and regulatory costs have produced uneven performance”, Tetiana Mykhailova says.
JPMorgan Chase reported net income of $15.3 bn, up 6% year over year, with diluted earnings of $5.57 per share and reported revenue of $50.2 bn. Investment banking fees increased 14% to $3 bn. Equities trading revenue rose 49%, although fixed-income trading declined 4%. → https://beinsure.com/news/jpmorgan-chase-net-income-rises-to-15-3bn/
Wells Fargo reported net income of $5.95 bn, up 6%, and earnings of $1.87 per share, exceeding the $1.85 consensus estimate. Revenue increased 2% to $21.87 bn but missed expectations of $22.31 bn. Net interest income rose approximately 5% to $12.52 bn, below forecasts. Average loans and deposits each increased 11%, while return on tangible common equity improved to 16.3%, approaching the bank’s 17% to 18% medium-term target. → https://beinsure.com/news/wells-fargo-q3-profit-rises-to-6bn/
Citigroup generated net income of $5.25 bn and earnings of $2.85 per share. Revenue increased 8% to $23.85 bn, supported by 15% growth in Services revenue and a 6% increase in Markets revenue. → https://beinsure.com/news/citigroup-q3-profit-jumps-beating-wall-street-estimates/
Bank of America reported revenue growth of 3% to approximately $30 bn, but net income declined to $6.9 bn from $8.3 bn, reflecting a $1.2 bn regulatory settlement charge. Adjusted earnings reached $1.08 per share, while net interest income increased 8% to $16.4 bn. Fixed-income trading revenue declined 17%, and unrealized securities losses increased to $109 bn from $85 bn at the end of June. → https://beinsure.com/news/bank-of-america-revenue-rises-30bn/
Morgan Stanley delivered stronger results, reporting revenue of approximately $20.3 bn and earnings of $3.03 per share, exceeding consensus estimates of $19.9 bn and $2.93, respectively. → https://beinsure.com/news/morgan-stanley-nyse-ms-stock-price-forecast/
Beinsure analysts assess the results as evidence that earnings quality and business composition are becoming more important differentiators among major banks.
“Institutions benefiting from diversified fee income, lending expansion and stronger wealth management activity appear better positioned to offset fluctuations in trading revenue. Funding costs, credit quality and capital efficiency remain relevant measures of future profitability”, Oleg Parashchak, Founder of Beinsure and CEO of Finance Media Holding.
BlackRock reported adjusted third-quarter earnings of $15.93 per share, representing 38% year-over-year growth, while revenue increased approximately 19% to $7.8 bn. Assets under management reached $15.49 trillion, compared with $13.46 trillion a year earlier. The company attracted $205 bn in net inflows, including $134.5 bn into iShares exchange-traded funds and $78.2 bn into fixed-income products. → https://beinsure.com/news/blackrock-q3-earnings-beat-forecasts-as-assets-reach-15-5-tn/
The results demonstrate that investment inflows and asset management fee income can remain strong during periods of elevated equity and bond market volatility.
BEINSURE US MARKET OUTLOOK
Beinsure analysts identify inflation persistence, corporate financing costs and earnings sustainability as the principal variables influencing US financial markets in the near term.
The immediate risk for technology valuations is that elevated interest rates increase the cost of financing AI infrastructure before anticipated returns are fully realized.
“For banks, stronger lending volumes and net interest income provide earnings support, although higher deposit costs, trading volatility and regulatory expenses may limit profitability gains”, Tetiana Mykhailova says. “BlackRock’s performance provides a contrasting indication of continued investor demand for professionally managed assets despite wider market uncertainty”.
The direction of US equities will depend partly on whether these releases reinforce expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening and whether corporate earnings growth remains sufficient to support current market valuations.
Beinsure analysts assess the current environment as one of increasing differentiation between sectors and individual companies, with financial strength, earnings quality and dependence on external financing becoming more significant factors in market performance.
