More than 36 million Americans have no natural teeth and millions more wear aligners or retainers; Voraiya says their daily cleaning routine is left out

AUSTIN, TX, UNITED STATES, October 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — With more than 36 million Americans having no natural teeth and millions more in aligner or retainer treatment, the company says appliance-specific hygiene is an overlooked half of October’s awareness campaign

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, observed by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association under this year’s theme, “The Power of Us.” Most public messaging during the month centers on brushing, flossing and routine dental visits. Voraiya LLC, an Austin, Texas-based company that makes cleaning devices for removable oral appliances, says that focus leaves out a large population: people who clean a retainer, aligner, denture or night guard every day, separately from their teeth.

The scale of that population is not small. According to the American College of Prosthodontists, more than 36 million Americans have no natural teeth and 120 million are missing at least one tooth, figures the organization expects to grow over the next two decades. On the orthodontic side, one major aligner manufacturer said last month that an estimated 200 million U.S. adults could benefit from orthodontic treatment, with only about one percent currently in it. Night guards, worn by many people for teeth grinding, add another appliance category with daily hygiene needs that rarely gets mentioned alongside toothbrushing campaigns.

“Dental hygiene messaging almost always means teeth and gums, and that makes sense because that’s most people’s experience,” said Eagle Zhou, founder of Voraiya LLC. “But if you’re one of the tens of millions of people who also has to clean a retainer or a denture every day, that’s a second routine most awareness campaigns never mention. It has different materials, different failure points if you do it wrong, and it gets skipped more easily because there’s less public guidance around it.”

Voraiya pointed to a care guide it published earlier this month describing how five common appliance categories — clear aligners, Essix-style clear retainers, wire-and-acrylic Hawley retainers, dentures, and night guards — differ in material and care needs and are not interchangeable when it comes to cleaning methods. The company said this kind of appliance-specific guidance is largely absent from mainstream dental hygiene messaging, which tends to treat all removable devices as a single category or omit them entirely.

The gap matters because appliance hygiene failures have different consequences than skipping a toothbrushing session. Residue or biofilm on a retainer or denture sits directly against oral tissue for extended periods, and in published research reviewed by the company in September, improperly cleaned appliances have been associated with fungal and bacterial buildup on the appliance material itself.

Voraiya said it is not asking people to replace brushing and flossing with appliance cleaning, but to treat the two as parallel routines rather than assuming oral hygiene is covered once the teeth are brushed. The company’s ultrasonic and UV-C cleaning devices are one option among several for people managing this second routine.
