Elder care experts encourage families to start the fall prevention conversation this Grandparents Day

GARLAND, TX, UNITED STATES, September 9, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Senior Care Authority, a nationally recognized leader in eldercare consulting and senior placement services, is encouraging families to mark this year’s National Grandparents Day, Sunday, Sept. 13, with more than cards and phone calls. The company is asking families to use the holiday as a starting point for a falls-prevention conversation, timed just ahead of Falls Prevention Awareness Week, Sept. 21-25, and Falls Prevention Awareness Day on Tuesday, Sept. 22, which also marks the first day of autumn.

Falls are one of the greatest threats to independence as we age. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one in four Americans age 65 and older reports falling each year, resulting in approximately 3 million emergency room visits and 1 million hospitalizations. In 2023 alone, more than 41,000 older Americans died from unintentional falls.

Falls Prevention Awareness Week is coordinated nationally by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) to raise awareness that falls among older adults are common but largely preventable and to promote balance and strength training and falls risk assessments. Falls remain one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, and Senior Care Authority’s network of local senior care advisors sees the impact those injuries can have on independence firsthand.

“Grandparents Day gives families a natural reason to sit down together, and that same conversation is the perfect opening to ask about balance, medications, and whether the house still fits how Grandma or Grandpa, Mom or Dad, actually gets around,” said Frank Samson, founder and CEO of Senior Care Authority. “A few simple questions during a Grandparents Day visit can catch a fall risk before it becomes an emergency room visit.”

In recognition of Falls Prevention Awareness Week, Senior Care Authority is sharing eight simple steps families can take to help older loved ones reduce fall risk and maintain their safety and independence:

1. Ask about your fall risk: A healthcare provider can evaluate balance, strength and walking and identify other factors that may increase the risk of falling.
2. Review medications regularly: Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can cause dizziness, drowsiness or other side effects that may increase fall risk.
3. Build strength and balance: Regular movement and activities such as strength exercises, tai chi or yoga can help improve stability and balance.
4. Keep your vision up to date: Changes in vision can make it harder to see obstacles and navigate surroundings safely. Schedule regular eye exams and keep prescriptions up to date.
5. Make the home safer: Remove loose rugs and clutter, secure electrical cords, and add better lighting or nightlights along hallways and stairs.
6. Add support where it counts: Install grab bars in bathrooms, secure handrails on stairs, and use non-slip mats in showers and tubs.
7. Choose shoes for stability: Wear well-fitting, supportive shoes with non-slip soles instead of loose slippers or socks without grips.
8. Use mobility aids when needed: Canes, walkers and other mobility aids can provide added stability when properly fitted and used. Ask a healthcare professional to help make sure the device is right for you.

Senior Care Authority advisors encourage families to treat these conversations as an ongoing part of caring for aging loved ones rather than a once-a-year checklist. For families who determine that a loved one may benefit from additional support or a different living environment, Senior Care Authority’s local advisors provide free, personalized guidance on senior living and care options in their community.
